Got into a huge debate about filler arcs at my local con last weekend

I was at the Anime Midwest con in Chicago, just hanging out in the main hall. This group next to me started talking about the Naruto filler arcs, and one guy said they were all a complete waste of time. I jumped in because, honestly, I kind of like some of them for the character moments. It turned into this whole 45 minute thing with like eight people, everyone throwing out examples. Someone brought up the G-8 arc in One Piece, which is filler but everyone loves, and it got me thinking. I used to just skip all filler without a second thought, but now I'm wondering if I'm missing out on some decent stuff just because it's not in the manga. How do you all decide what filler is worth watching? Is there a list or a rule of thumb you use?

Honestly, checking online fan ratings is the best move. Sites like MyAnimeList have separate scores for filler episodes, so you can see what people actually enjoyed. It saved me from skipping the One Piece G-8 arc, which is a total gem. Just look up the arc name and you'll find a consensus pretty fast.

Laughing at myself for relying on random Reddit threads to decide if an arc is worth watching. I straight up skipped the G-8 arc for years because someone online called it "pointless filler" and only caught it after a friend literally forced me to sit through it. Now I'm the one yelling at people to not trust the first opinion they see. Has your method ever led you to a total dud you actually sat through?

I get that, filler can be a real gamble.
