Binged 90s mecha classics in 3 nights, now I am split on the genre

I watched Gundam Wing and Evangelion back to back over a long weekend, which is about 45 episodes total. Wing felt like a straightforward war story with clear heroes, while Eva dove into messy mental stuff that left me drained. I thought I would enjoy Wing more because it is simpler, but Eva stuck with me in a way I did not expect. So my question is, does a show need to be emotionally heavy to be great, or is there still room for plain old action and fun in anime? Has anyone else had a marathon flip their opinion on a whole genre?
