Walked a new build in Phoenix and counted 11 can lights with no fire alarm within 30 feet
The builder put smoke detectors only in the hallways and called it done, and none of them were interconnected. I quoted $1,850 to add heat sensors in the kitchen, a CO combo near the furnace, and tie it all together on one loop. Anybody else seeing builders cheap out on this in new subdivisions or is it just the Phoenix market?

11 cans on one circuit and no interconnect is pretty normal for tract homes, they just meet the bare code minimum and move on. 30 feet is a long way to hear a beep from a hallway when you're dead asleep though, so swapping in a few combo units might be worth it. Not saying every house is a death trap, but $1,850 sounds more like a nice-to-have than a must.
