That six-story retrofit taught me a new trick with old phone lines

I was swapping out a dying panel in an older office building in downtown Austin last Friday, and the existing Cat5 runs were too short for the new layout. Instead of pulling new cable through three floors of drop ceilings, I used a cheap RJ31X jack to bridge the old alarm loop right into the new keypad bus. Has anyone else found a clever way to reuse legacy wiring instead of ripping it all out?
