Spent $80 on a cheap cable tester, cost me a full day on site
Bought a no-name toner and probe set from Amazon to save money. Took me 4 hours to trace a short in a panel that a good Fluke would have found in 10 minutes. Anybody else swear by a specific brand for troubleshooting?

Yeah I used to think all testers were basically the same too.

Honestly, are you really out that much money and time? I've used cheap testers for years and yeah they're slower but not a whole day slower unless you're just new to the panel. You probably spent more time frustrated than actually troubleshooting, not every bad tool is the end of the world.

That is a fair point about frustration adding to the time, but how do you handle intermittent faults with cheap gear? The stuff I bought just gives a simple tone or nothing at all, no way to tell signal strength or find a break in the middle of a wire. It is not about just being slow, it is about not having the right info to make a good call. Has a no-name tester ever led you completely astray or made you miss a fault you knew was there?
