My boss showed me a 10-year-old fire alarm panel still working perfectly

It was in a commercial building downtown, and the tech who installed it told me they've only ever replaced the backup battery. Makes you rethink the whole 'planned obsolescence' thing, doesn't it?

See it with old kitchen appliances too. They built stuff to last back then.

Built to last" meant a 30 pound toaster that took five minutes and could burn your house down. My grandma's fridge from 1970 used three times the power of my new one. Lasting isn't the same as being good.
