For about four years I labeled every can and contact with masking tape and a Sharpie, which worked fine until the tape dried out and peeled off inside a panel in a hot attic in Mesa. Last month a customer called me at 11pm because she tripped a zone and had no idea which door it was, and I had to drive back out on a Sunday to figure it out. Now I sketch a simple floor plan on paper at the kitchen table before I leave, number each device, and tape it inside the can door. Took me ten extra minutes per job and I have not gotten a single after-hours call since. Anyone else do a paper map, or do you just number the zones and hope for the best?
Ha, so basically you built a treasure map because grown adults can't remember which door they walked through. Gotta love it. That 11pm call and Sunday drive is the part that gets me though, nothing like losing a whole day of rest to a tripped zone and a piece of tape that gave up in the heat. Honestly the paper map is a smart move, ten minutes up front beats a two hour round trip on your day off every time. I bet that customer felt pretty silly once she saw the map taped right there in the can door too.
