I just realized I've been mounting alarm panels wrong for 2 years
Was out on a service call last week and the homeowner watched me screw the panel directly into the drywall. He told me his last guy always used a backplate with standoffs to avoid moisture wicking through the screws. Checked 12 of my old installs and 3 had rust forming behind the panel. Anyone else skip this step and regret it later?

Yeah, found that exact rust issue on a remodel job last year. Switched to a plastic backplate with rubber standoffs and never looked back.

The plastic backplate with standoffs is the way to go. I switched about a year ago after seeing the same rust on a buddy's install that was only 8 months old. The moisture wicking thing is real, especially in basements where humidity hangs around. I even started using those little rubber grommets on the screw holes just for extra peace of mind. It takes an extra 5 minutes but beats having to rip out a rotted panel and explain to a customer why their system got all crusty.
