Public safety hazard is a strong claim. What exactly did you build, a homemade roller coaster in your backyard? Most DIY stuff is just a wobbly shelf or a bad paint job. Unless you're messing with live wires or gas lines, it's probably just ugly, not dangerous.

Oh man, I feel that! My last DIY shelf looked fine for a week, then it just slowly gave up and dumped all my books on the cat. He's okay, but he gives me a look now. I'm pretty sure my entire apartment is held together by hope and uneven screw lengths. I've accepted that my home is a danger zone for me alone.
