My air fryer caught fire making chicken wings last Tuesday

I was cooking wings at 400 degrees like I always do. Opened the basket after 12 minutes and saw flames coming from the back. Turns out I hadn't cleaned the heating element in about 6 months and the grease built up. I dumped baking soda on it and it went out quick. Now I scrub the top element after every 3 uses. Has anyone else had grease fires in their air fryer?

Wait, you had flames shooting out the back and just threw baking soda on it... I would've panicked and grabbed the fire extinguisher, no joke. I've had grease smoke before but never actual fire, that's terrifying. I bet that smell stayed in your kitchen for days too, huh?

Did you know baking soda actually works better than water on grease fires? I had a small one once from a pan that got too hot, and the baking soda knocked it right out. The smell did linger though, I had to air out the kitchen for a couple days and wipe down all the cabinets to get rid of the greasy film.
