Spent 8 hours building a custom AI agent last night before realizing the whole thing was a mess, should've just used a simple chain
So I've been messing around with building my own AI agent for about 3 months now, just little stuff, and last night around 2am I finally hit the wall. I was trying to make this thing that reads my emails and drafts replies, and I had wired up like 6 different tools with a planner loop and a memory store and a whole router thing on top. It kept losing track of what step it was on and replying to the wrong thread. Then a buddy of mine at work looked at it for 30 seconds and goes, why not just use one prompt with the email and the reply rules and skip the agent loop. I rebuilt it in 40 minutes with a single chain and it works better than the thing I sweated over all month. I felt so dumb I just sat there staring at my terminal. Has anyone else built way too much scaffolding for a task that didn't need it, and what tipped you off?
