My take: Early AI chat was more fun than today's smart assistants.

I remember when chatbots were just for laughs. Now they're so serious and try to do everything, but I liked the dumb ones.

Remember SmarterChild on AIM in the early 2000s. That thing would just tell jokes and give horoscopes, not try to manage your calendar. The old bots felt like a weird friend, not a productivity tool that's judging you for not being efficient.

Agree completely. Today's bots are like nagging assistants, but SmarterChild was just for laughs.

Funny how memory works. That bot still answered basic questions about weather or movie times if you asked. Maybe the difference is we didn't expect it to run our lives, so the useless parts felt like a feature. It was a tool for wasting time, which is a type of function. Not sure one is inherently better, just meant for different things.
