Just realized my smart speaker has been quietly learning a new voice command I never taught it
I was talking to a friend about a movie and my speaker in the kitchen chimed in with the cast list. I looked it up and the company's blog said they're testing 'ambient learning' where the AI picks up on context from background chatter. Feels useful but also a bit creepy, right? Where do you draw the line between a helpful feature and an invasion of privacy?

Yeah that "ambient learning" thing is the creep factor for me. It's one thing to answer a direct question, but it's another to listen to random conversations and decide what you might want. What if you're venting about a personal problem and it suddenly suggests a therapist ad? Or joking about a trip and it pops up with flight deals. That's not helpful, that's just eavesdropping to sell you stuff.

My friend got a diaper ad after complaining about her baby crying.
