A developer in Austin told me AI will make most coding jobs vanish in 5 years
We were at a meetup last spring, and he said his team is already using a model that writes whole modules, which really shook me. I argued that it just changes the job, letting coders focus on bigger problems, but he was dead set on his view. So, who's right here, is AI going to replace developers or just be another tool they use?

I mean, maybe it'll just be like when compilers came along and changed everything but didn't kill the job.

That line about compilers really got me. I used to be sure this new tech would wipe out a ton of jobs for good. But comparing it to compilers makes a lot of sense. It changed how coders worked but created way more coding jobs in the long run. It didn't replace the need for people, it just changed the tools. You might be right that this is another big shift like that, not a full replacement.

But what if this tech is more like the car replacing the horse, @mason756? It feels like a different kind of change.
