TIL I've been composting wrong for 2 years - did anyone else miss this?
So I've been tossing all my kitchen scraps into my backyard bin for like 2 years. Last week I noticed it smelled super bad and nothing was breaking down. My neighbor saw me dumping stuff and asked if I was balancing greens and browns. I had no clue what he meant. Turns out I was just piling up wet food scraps with no dry leaves or paper. Did anyone else figure out they were doing zero waste stuff totally backwards? What was your 'oh wait' moment?

balancing greens and browns" sounds like overcomplicating dirt.

Nah, I gotta push back on that a little. It's not overcomplicating, it's literally the difference between a pile that rots and a pile that works right. Too many greens and you end up with a slimy, stinking mess that just attracts bugs. Too many browns and your pile just sits there doing nothing for months. It's like saying seasoning your food is overcomplicating cooking, you know? Get the mix wrong and you'll be mad you didn't pay attention.
