My first compost pile turned into something way better than I expected

I threw kitchen scraps in a bin last fall thinking it would just rot down into dirt. Six months later I pulled out this rich black soil that smelled like fresh rain, not garbage at all. Did anyone else's first attempt at composting surprise them?

I mean it's funny how a lot of the best stuff in life comes from just letting things sit and do their thing. Like how a good stew gets better overnight or how a rough draft turns into something decent after you walk away from it for a while. There's something to be said for trusting the process and not trying to force everything to be perfect right away.

Man, you're so right. Last week I was working on this lesson plan and just couldn't get it to click, so I closed the laptop and went for a walk. Came back the next morning and it all just fell into place in like ten minutes. Your brain is doing work you don't even realize when you step away.
