Spent three days at a client's factory and saw something that changed how I think about warehouse work

I was doing some consulting at a packaging plant in Toledo last month. The warehouse guys had rigged up a system using old conveyor belts and bungee cords to slide boxes down to the loading dock without anyone having to carry them. It wasn't pretty but it cut their loading time by almost 20 minutes per truck. Has anyone else seen creative problem solving like that at their job that just made you stop and think?

I read an article once about how workers in a Nissan plant rigged up a way to keep assembly line parts from falling off during a bumpy stretch. They just used old car mats and some magnets from broken speakers. The managers were pretty surprised when they saw it in action because it beat out the expensive sensor system they had paid for the year before. Stuff like that makes me wonder how many companies miss out on good ideas just because they never ask the guys who actually do the work. What was the bungee cord setup like though, was it pretty stable or did you worry about stuff falling off?
