The woman at my church told me my depression was demonic oppression and I actually believed her for a week.

It was after service in the parking lot and she squeezed my hand so tight while she said it, has anyone else had a fellow believer say something that messed with your head way more than it helped?

Did she offer to bring a holy water sprinkler system along with that advice?

Right there with you, and here is the angle nobody talks about: sometimes these folks are just PROJECTING their own spiritual insecurities onto you. She squeezed your hand THAT hard because she needed to feel powerful and righteous in that moment, not because she actually has any clue what's going on in your head. I had a deacon tell me my PTSD was just "unforgiveness" and I spent three months hating myself for not being able to pray it away. It took a Christian counselor explaining that the Bible never calls clinical depression a demon to finally break that lie. That woman probably meant well in her own messed up way, but her "help" was really about her need to feel like she has all the answers.
