Three years back I swapped a copper water main for PEX on a 1920s house in Cleveland
Last month I had to go back and cut out that same PEX run because the homeowner's grandkid somehow melted it with a space heater in the crawl space. Has anyone else found old school copper still beats new stuff for certain spots?

@mark611 nailed it, copper doesn't flinch around heat like PEX does.

Copper handles heat way better than PEX, which is basically glorified plastic tubing when you get down to it. That crawl space setup was asking for trouble with any kind of heat source nearby, and copper would have shrugged it off. Sometimes the old rigid stuff has a practical advantage that flexible convenience just can't match.
