My neighbor told me I was sharpening my chisels wrong for 15 years

Old guy next door saw me in the garage and said I was grinding the bevel way too steep. He showed me his 30 year old chisel with a 25 degree angle and it cut like a razor. Changed my angle by 5 degrees and now I don't have to force anything through the wood. Anyone else get a tip from an old timer that just wrecked their old method?

Five degrees is hardly wrecking anything, dude.

Wait, you really think five degrees is nothing? I had a neighbor who ignored a crack in his foundation for YEARS because he thought it was "just a little one," and let me tell you, that tiny thing turned into a MASSIVE headache. Five degrees might not seem like much on a thermometer, but in a foundation or a wall, that small shift can throw everything off. Pipes get stressed, drywall cracks, doors start sticking, and before you know it you're looking at thousands in repairs. I learned this the hard way when my own house had a half-inch gap after a bad winter. Trust me, that "hardly anything" adds up fast and nobody wants to deal with that kind of mess.
