I finally got told my knitting tension was wrong

I was at a craft fair in Portland last fall and this older lady picked up my scarf and said 'your tension is all over the place, you're gripping the yarn too tight.' I was pretty offended at first because I thought I was doing fine. But I went home and looked at my work and she was right. The stitches were uneven and some rows were way tighter than others. I started loosening my grip and it made a huge difference after about a week of practice. Now I actually check my tension every few rows instead of just rushing through. Has anyone else had a stranger give them feedback that actually helped?

Nah, I think she was just being rude and gatekeeping.

Got handed a crochet hook at a yarn store once and told I was poking myself like I was fighting the yarn, not making a blanket. Spent the next week stabbing myself less and actually figuring out what a slip stitch was supposed to feel like. Some strangers just have the brutal truth and a better grip on your craft than you do.
