And the Attitude Era gets way too much credit for stuff that was already happening. ECW and even some WCW stuff did the edgy stuff first but cleaner and with better wrestling. The whole era was basically just WWE finally catching up to what fans already wanted.

The whole "catching up to what fans already wanted" bit is what gets me. If they were just catching up, then why did Vince McMahon have to completely overhaul the presentation and push guys like Austin and Rock who were basically anti-heroes at the time? ECW was gritty and desperate, but WWE polished that edge into mainstream gold with better production and storylines that actually had payoff. You really think WWE could've kept doing cartoon characters like Doink and sparkly tights guys like The Godwinns and survived against Nitro's cruiserweights and nWo stuff without changing everything?

Idk, maybe it's just me but I always kinda figured the Attitude Era worked because they took the grit from ECW and the edge from WCW and mixed it with that big budget production WWE had. You could tell they weren't just copying stuff, they were making it bigger and cleaner. I remember watching Raw back then and thinking how the camera work and lighting made everything feel like a big deal, even when the storylines were silly. The Godwinns and Doink stuff was fun for a while but that cartoony vibe just wasn't gonna hold up against the nWo invasion angle. WWE had to find a middle ground between being polished and being dangerous, and for a lot of us fans, that mix of chaos and production value is what sold it.
