Just realized maybe I was wrong about synthetic vs conventional oil

My buddy Matt from down the street says he's been running conventional in his 07 F-150 for 180k miles with no issues, but I've always swore by synthetic because of some article I read years ago. Am I actually wasting money on premium oil or is he just lucky and rolling the dice on sludge?

Used to be team synthetic no matter what, ngl. But then my buddy runs his '05 Silverado on the cheap stuff at Walmart for like 150k miles, still going strong. Honestly, for modern engines, conventional's not the sludge factory I thought it was. If you're changing oil on time, you're probably fine either way.

My neighbor Frank has a 2002 Toyota Camry with 220,000 miles on it, and he's run the cheapest conventional oil he can find since day one. He changes it every 3,000 miles like clockwork, never missed a single interval. Last time I saw him under the hood, the engine looked clean as a whistle inside, no sludge at all. So I think if you stay on top of your changes, conventional is fine for most cars.
