That $20 product photography box I laughed at actually doubled my sales

I been selling vintage clothes on eBay for about 6 months and my photos were just crap. I'd lay stuff on my bed or hang it on a door and snap a pic with my phone. Read somewhere that good photos matter so I grabbed this cheap lightbox kit from Amazon for like $20. Thought it was gonna be a total gimmick but I was desperate. First week using it I sold 4 items that had been sitting for months. The lighting just makes everything look cleaner and more professional. I still use my phone camera but the box cuts out all the shadows and messy backgrounds. Now I'm wondering what else I'm being cheap about that's holding me back. Anyone else have a tool they thought was useless but turned out to be game changer?

actually the one nobody talks about is how a plain white backdrop changes your pricing power. saw someone say they used a $3 roll of white paper from ikea instead of a fancy box and customers started messaging them asking if the items were "from a boutique." it's less about the gear and more about signaling to the buyer that you actually care about what you're selling. makes people feel safer spending more money with you. what platform are you mostly selling on?

omg yes the "signaling" thing is so real. i once listed a vintage dress on depop with just a white wall behind it and someone messaged me asking if it was "designer sample sale leftovers" lol. i was like girl no it's literally from a thrift bin but okay! also the white paper trick totally works. i switched from a messy desk to a plain sheet of poster board and my average sale price went up like 15 bucks. buyers are weird like that - they see clean and square and their brain goes "this person has their life together so the item must be good." i'm mostly on poshmark these days but i dabble in ebay for the weird stuff.
