Tried boiling rust off a differential cover in a 55 gallon drum of water ended up with soup instead
I threw a rusty Dana 44 cover from my 79 CJ7 into a drum of water with some baking soda and hooked up a battery charger like the YouTube guys say. Came back 8 hours later and the water was literally brown sludge, the cover had more pitting than before, and the garage smelled like a dead swamp in July. Anyone else have that electrolysis setup backfire on them this bad?

Oh man, that exact same thing happened to me with a Ford 9 inch housing. I followed the whole battery charger and washing soda setup from a YouTube video and ended up with orange mud that stained my concrete floor forever. The housing came out looking like the surface of the moon with all these new pits and craters. I think the charger I used was too weak or maybe I left it too long, but now I just hit stuff with a wire wheel and call it good.
