Learned the hard way that 'verbal agreement' means nothing in small claims court

I lent my neighbor $300 in cash last summer to fix his fence, he promised to pay me back by September. Now he's claiming he never borrowed anything and the judge said without written proof I'm out of luck. Anyone else get burned by trusting a handshake deal?

Oh that hurts my heart honestly. I had something similar happen with a roommate once over security deposit money and it stung real bad. People really show their true colors when cash is involved. It's such a shame that a person's word doesn't hold any weight anymore especially with neighbors who you see every day. Hopefully karma catches up to him and his fence falls apart again. Maybe next time just take a quick picture of the cash with them or write something on a napkin just to have something.

Read an article the other day that said money fights are the second biggest cause of friendship breakups after cheating. Makes total sense after reading your story. A quick text message or a paper receipt would take ten seconds and save everyone the headache. Just one of those hard lessons you gotta learn the rough way sometimes.
