Ancient recipes with no measurements make historical cooking a guessing game

I tried to bake bread from a medieval manuscript and it turned into a brick because they didn't say how hot the oven should be.

Yeah my "brick bread" could totally be a museum piece next to some hardtack, @william_wood. Honestly I might have accidentally done a historical reenactment without knowing it. Tried to eat a slice anyway and it just defies physics, like chewing on a dense sponge made of sawdust. Maybe I should keep it for emergencies, could probably stop a bullet. My next attempt will just be crackers, way safer for everyone's teeth.
