Fooled by fool's gold again at the creek
Found some shiny stuff in the water, got real excited. Turns out it was just pyrite, not the real deal. Does this happen to you guys a lot too?

What is it about that first flash in the water that makes us forget all the past times? Even when I know, in my head, it is almost certainly pyrite, my heart still jumps. I guess the hope is the real fun part, not the finding. Does that little moment of pure hope keep you going back to the creek anyway?

Fooled by fool's gold again" is my entire hobby in three words... I get excited every single time like I don't know what pyrite looks like.

But hang on, isn't getting fooled the whole point? That split second where the light hits a certain way and you're absolutely convinced, this time it's real, that's the thrill. Riley_west is right about the first flash, but I'd say it's not about hope, it's about the suspension of disbelief. Like watching a magic trick you know is fake but still makes you gasp. If you ever truly learned what pyrite looks like, you'd stop looking, and then you'd never find the real thing. The fun is in the chase, not the catch.
