Warning: I had to choose between fixing my 1998 CRT monitor or finally buying a new screen.

The old Trinitron had a flickering power supply, and a repair kit was about $60 versus $150 for a basic modern monitor. I spent a weekend with a soldering iron and a schematic I printed from a library computer, and it's working again, just with a slight hum. Has anyone else brought a big old tube TV or monitor back from the brink recently?

Wait, you printed the schematic from a library computer? That's wild.

And the library printer too, Scott. That's the part that gets me. Those things are always out of toner or jammed with someone's term paper. The idea of it spitting out a clean, full schematic is the real miracle here.

Our campus printer jammed on a single page last week.
