My old cassette deck in the garage just needed a new belt

Last month I found my dad's old Sony TC-K611S from 1988, but it wouldn't play. I opened it up and saw the rubber drive belt had turned to goo. I ordered a FRX8.2 belt kit online for $12, cleaned the old residue with isopropyl alcohol, and put the new one on. Has anyone else fixed a deck this way, or did I miss a step?

Nice find with that Sony deck. Cleaning the old belt goo with alcohol was the right move, that sticky mess is the worst part. The FRX8.2 kit is the exact one for that model, so you're good. Only other thing I'd check is the idler tire if it has one, those can get hard and slick over time and cause slipping. If it plays fine now, you nailed it.

Oh man, that sticky belt goo is the worst, right? Good call on the alcohol clean. I'd run a tape through it and just listen for any wow or flutter, that'll tell you if the new belt's tension is good. Sometimes they need a little break-in time.

Ever notice how the simplest fixes feel the best? You just replaced a worn-out part and brought something back to life... no fancy tools or tech needed. That's a small win you can actually hold in your hands.
