My neighbor Ron said I was overthinking my vegetable garden layout

I was telling him about my whole spreadsheet plan with companion planting and crop rotation schedules. He just laughed and said "plants ain't that picky, just put them in the ground and water them." I thought he was being lazy but after three seasons of trying his way with a basic 4x8 bed, I actually got more tomatoes and peppers than when I micro-managed everything. He never used any fancy soil mixes either, just compost from his own pile. Has anyone else found that overplanning a garden actually hurts the yield?

What kind of soil did he actually end up using, though? Like was it just straight up dirt from his yard or did he mix stuff in?

Started treating my soil like a science experiment and ended up with science fair failure.
