Remember when you could fix a toaster with a screwdriver and a prayer?
My old Sunbeam from college finally quit. I tried the old way first, just poking around inside with a basic kit. Then I found the service manual online for free and followed the actual diagnostic steps. The manual had me check the continuity of the main heating element with a multimeter, which took five minutes and showed it was fine, then the thermal fuse, which was blown. Replaced that $3 part and it works. Why did we ever just guess? Has anyone else had a simple fix that a manual solved?

Ugh, seriously? That sounds like a whole project. Most people just want toast, not a new hobby. I'd rather buy a new one than hunt down some obscure manual and mess with a multimeter. Time is money, you know?

But what if it's just a loose wire?

Exactly, it's not like we're all trying to become electricians. Most of the time it is just a loose wire like @julia892 said, and you can see that without a manual. The whole process of finding a manual and getting a multimeter just turns a ten second check into a whole afternoon. New toasters are cheap, and my free time isn't.
