I was ready to replace my bathroom fan over a constant hum

In my experience, the hum came from dust built up on the fan blade shaft. I took off the cover and wiped it down with a damp cloth, which took maybe ten minutes. That fixed it right up, and now it runs quiet. Your mileage may vary, but it saved me a bunch of cash.

Exactly. @the_mila nailed it. We get tricked into thinking problems are huge and need expensive solutions. Half the time it's just a loose wire or a clogged filter.
