My first time making bread looked like a science experiment gone wrong

I followed a simple recipe but my yeast must have been old because the dough never rose. I baked it anyway and got a brick that could have broken a window. Anyone know a good way to test if your yeast is still alive before you start?

Oh man, a brick that could break a window is a perfect description. I've been there, my first loaf could have doubled as a doorstop. To test yeast, I just mix a teaspoon of it with a little warm water and a pinch of sugar. If it doesn't get all foamy and bubbly after ten minutes, it's time for a new packet.

Remember when ninamartin's bread was so dense we used it as a paperweight?

Honestly, my first loaf was so hard I could have used it as a hockey puck.
