Vent: My brother-in-law swore by using a 4-inch auger for every post hole.
Tried it on a job with heavy clay soil in Knoxville. Spent half a day fighting it before switching to a 6-inch. Anyone else have a go-to bit size for different ground types?

Man, that 4-inch bit is a lifesaver in clay.

Remember trying to force a 4-inch through that red clay myself. Felt like I was trying to drill through a brick with a toothpick. Some days you just have to admit the bigger tool is the right tool.

Tried to be a hero once and use a 2-inch hand auger in that same stuff. Spent an hour making a six-inch deep hole and nearly threw my back out. My neighbor came over with his big gas-powered one and had it done in two minutes flat. I just stood there holding my sad little tool, feeling like a complete idiot.
