Shoutout to the old guy at the lumber yard who told me about fence post spacing

He said the old rule of 8 feet between posts is fine, but for a really solid vinyl fence in a windy spot, you should go down to 6 feet. I tried it on a job last week in Omaha and the difference is huge. Anyone else adjust their spacing for different materials or locations?

Fights the sail effect" - man that is just such a perfect way to put it. Ive been doing this 15 years and never heard it described like that but its spot on. I did a big privacy fence last fall in a spot that gets crazy gusts off the lake, did 8 foot spacing like usual, and come spring half the panels were leaning like they were drunk. Had to go back and redo the whole thing at 6 feet. Night and day difference, no movement at all now. Makes me wonder how many fences Ive built that were just waiting to fail and I never knew it.

So @the_abby, did that blog say anything about spacing for wood fences?

Read a contractor's blog that said the same thing about wind. They argued tighter spacing fights the sail effect better than just using heavier posts. Makes total sense after seeing your results.
