Saw a wild fence design at a park in Boise last week

It was a split rail, but they'd used reclaimed railroad ties for the posts (which is a neat idea, but I'm worried about the creosote). Anyone ever work with that material before?

Yeah, and the creosote can mess with the soil for years. It's not just about touching it. That stuff can leach out when it rains and kill plants or even get into nearby water. Makes the whole area around the fence kinda dead. The look is cool but the long-term damage isn't worth it.

Wait, modern creosote is way less toxic than the old stuff.

Avoid the creosote, seriously.
