Rant: A city inspector in Boise told me my 6-foot cedar posts were fine for a 4-foot fence, and I've been overbuilding for a decade.
He said, 'You're putting a Corvette engine in a mail truck,' and now I'm rethinking every materials list I've ever written, so what's your rule of thumb for post size to fence height?

Honestly, I just double the post height for anything over four feet.

Just wait until you try to set a sixteen footer. You'll need a backhoe and a whole new set of friends to help.

Tbh @thea143, that rule works until you're trying to bury an eight-foot post and realize you've just ordered a telephone pole. Gonna need a bigger hole and a whole different kind of weekend.
