That's a nightmare scenario for sure. Seeing something fail live like that really sticks with you. I had a similar panic after a costume seam just gave out during a dress rehearsal. It totally changed how I buy fabric now. I mean, you really can't trust the basic stuff they sell at most places for real performance. Finding a good supplier that understands movement is everything. It's worth the extra hassle to get the right material.
