Just read that the average wedding dress uses about 7 yards of fabric

I was looking at some old sewing manuals and that number really surprised me. It made me rethink how much material I actually need for my own designs. Has anyone else had to adjust their fabric estimates after learning something basic like that?

Actually, that 7 yard figure is usually for the lining and fashion fabric combined. The fashion fabric alone for a simple gown might only be 4 or 5 yards. It really depends on the skirt style and train length. A ballgown with a long train can easily use 10 yards just for the top layer. Those old manuals are great, but modern fabric widths are often wider, which changes the math. Always do a quick mock-up with cheap muslin to check your own pattern's needs.

Ten yards just for the top layer? That's a whole roll of fabric. I pictured maybe enough for a big curtain, not a single piece of clothing. My brain can't even picture how you'd cut that out without taking over an entire house.

Yeah, I had the same problem until I just started taping together some old newspaper sheets to lay out the pieces first. Saved me a ton of wasted fabric and a headache.
