Bought a $400 digital pattern drafting software and it's basically unusable for my workflow. Any decent free alternatives?

That's a brutal waste of money. I'd check out Seamly2D, it's open source and pretty powerful for basic blocks. The interface takes some getting used to but it gets the job done for free.

Brutal waste of money" is the story of half the software out there. river_burns is right, you get used to the free tool and then wonder what the paid one was even for.

My first pattern software was a $250 program that crashed if you looked at it wrong. I spent more time on tech support forums than actually drafting. River_burns has the right idea, free tools like Seamly2D might look basic but they just work. You learn the quirks and then you're not fighting the program all day. It's crazy how much paid software gets in its own way. I'd rather deal with a simple free tool than an expensive headache.
