Pro tip: I switched from a standard rasp to a diamond grit one for my finishing work.
I was getting tired of how fast my old rasps would dull, especially on tough quarter cracks. Last month, I bought a 10 inch diamond grit rasp on a friend's advice. The difference is huge. It stays sharp for weeks instead of days, and the finish it leaves is way smoother. I just finished a tough draft horse this morning and the job was done in half the time. Has anyone else tried these and found a brand they really like?

Honestly, it sounds like you just had a really bad rasp before. A decent steel rasp shouldn't go dull that fast, even on quarter cracks. I've used the same one for years and it's fine. Maybe the diamond one is good, but calling it a game changer seems like a stretch. It's just a different file.

Listen, jones.mason, you might have gotten a good one. My old steel rasp was trash on hard hooves and the diamond file just works better for me. That difference is the whole game.

Yeah I've been through this exact thing. If your steel rasp is junk even on a fresh hoof it's probably just a cheap one that wasn't hardened right. I switched to a diamond one after ruining two steel rasps on the same nasty quarter crack and honestly the difference was night and day for me. Not saying steel can't work for some people but when you're dealing with really hard hooves the diamond just eats through it way smoother with way less effort.
