I used to think a 3/4 inch rasp was fine for everything, but after a tough quarter crack repair on a draft horse in Spokane last fall, I switched to a 1 inch. What's your go-to rasp size and why?

Ever try a half-round rasp? I keep a 1 inch half-round in my kit for big cracks on wide feet. The flat side gets the wall smooth and the round side is perfect for cleaning up the inside of a quarter crack without taking off too much hoof. It's a game changer for drafts or any horse with a deep crack.

A draft horse in Spokane? That's a serious animal to work on. I can't imagine trying to manage a quarter crack on one with just a 3/4 inch. My go-to is a 7/8 inch for most of my regular saddle work. It gives me enough bite without being too aggressive on a Thoroughbred's foot. For a big Percheron or something, though, I'd probably grab the one inch too.
