Found a simple fix for a horse that kept pulling its foot away during trimming
I had this one paint gelding that would yank his foot back every time I tried to work on his front hooves. His owner said three other farriers had given up on him. I was about ready to do the same after two visits. Then I tried something my granddad mentioned once: I started holding the hoof with my legs braced together, almost like a vise, instead of just my hands. I also kept my head down and my shoulder against his leg, so he couldn't jerk it sideways. The first time I did it, he tried twice and then just stood there. I got a full trim done in about 15 minutes. It wasn't about being stronger, it was about using my body to block the movement he wanted to make. Has anyone else found a specific body position that works on a difficult horse?

That leg vise trick is a game changer. Works on the stubborn ones that lean back too, just shift your weight into their shoulder.
