My uncle insisted I buy a $2,500 pressure washer for my new side hustle, but after 3 months I've only had two jobs.
Turns out the 'if you buy it, the work will come' advice only works if you actually know how to find customers first... anyone else start a business by buying the tool instead of getting the clients?

Honestly, that's a tough way to learn. Did you ask your uncle how he finds his own customers? Tbh, buying the tool first is putting the cart before the horse. You gotta know you can get the work before you spend that kind of cash. It's a classic mistake, but now you're stuck trying to make the payments. Ngl, that advice is pretty backwards for starting any real business.

Do you ever notice how many people push buying the right equipment first, like it's some kind of magic solution? I see it everywhere, not just in work but in hobbies too. People think having the newest van or the best lawnmower will make them successful, but it's really about knowing your market and building trust first. My nephew spent a fortune on a high end sewing machine for a side hustle, and now it's just gathering dust because she never figured out if anyone actually wanted to pay for her stuff. It's this weird idea that spending money replaces the hard work of finding customers and learning the ropes. You're right to call it out, sometimes the old fashioned way of starting small is still the best.

Man that's rough but is it really that big of a deal? @stellas56 makes a fair point about the cart before the horse, but lots of people start with some gear. You've got a great machine now, so maybe just focus on cheap local ads or asking neighbors for work. Couldn't you just try that for a few weeks before deciding it was a total mistake?
