My plan to make a perfect birthday cake ended with a fire alarm

I saw a video for a fancy layered cake with caramel drip. Bought all the stuff, even a cake turntable. The caramel boiled over on my stove, smoke everywhere. Set off the smoke detector, kids screaming, dog barking. Had to order pizza instead. Anyone else have a baking plan go up in smoke, literally?

Well, I have to disagree there. That kind of disaster is exactly how you learn. My first caramel was a burnt pot, but the next one was perfect. Giving up and buying stuff just means you never get better. The mess and the alarm are part of the story you tell later. I would try it again next week.

Oh man, that's the worst! I used to be so stubborn about making everything from scratch. One time I tried making my own spun sugar for a cake, and it was just a brittle, sticky mess that fused to my counter. That was the day I learned some store-bought shortcuts are totally okay. Your caramel story really brings that home for me.
