My plan to fix my own deck in a weekend was a total fail

I saw a huge before and after difference in just three days. The deck at my house in Tacoma looked fine, so I bought $300 worth of wood and stain to do a quick refresh. I started sanding and found the whole frame was rotten underneath, which I didn't see at all from the top. Has anyone else had a simple project turn into a huge mess like that?

Oh man, that's the worst kind of surprise. Found the same thing under some floorboards I was replacing last spring. It always goes deeper than you first see.

Under the porch steps too? That's terrifying.

My neighbor in Bellingham had the same thing happen with her porch steps. That hidden rot is a real budget killer.
