My grocery shopping system failed because I followed common advice

I set up a detailed meal plan to cut food waste and save money. Everyone says planning meals ahead stops impulse buys. But I found it too strict when my schedule changed. For example, if I worked late, my planned ingredients went bad. This meant I threw out food and still ordered takeout. I learned that rigid plans don't work if life is unpredictable. What methods work for you when plans need to bend?

Actually, having two planned options cuts down on the daily "what's for dinner" stress big time. It's not about picking in the moment, it's about having back up ingredients you know will keep. Like, if Plan A is salmon, Plan B is a pasta that uses shelf stable stuff you always have.

Planning works for me because I build in flexible options. Maybe try planning two possible dinners for a night instead of one.

Two dinner plans? Isn't that just deciding what to eat with extra steps? I'd get decision fatigue just picking which plan to follow. Sounds like more work than just figuring it out when you're hungry.
