I thought the 'freeze your credit' thing was just fearmongering until someone opened a $5,000 loan in my name in Phoenix last year.

Oh man, I was the same way! I totally thought it was overkill until my info got leaked in a data breach. Now I keep mine frozen, no question.

Ugh, that's such a nightmare to deal with! I had a similar thing happen with a credit card opened in another state. It took months of paperwork and phone calls to clear my name. Freezing your credit is a total pain, but it really is the only way to lock things down.
