My graphic design professor said my work was 'too safe' and I got defensive at first
Back in 2019 at community college, my professor told me I always used the same 3 fonts and never pushed the composition. I was ticked off for a week until I realized she was right - I was scared to fail so I played it boring. Started experimenting with weird type pairings and it actually got me my first freelance client in Austin. Anybody else get a critique that stung at first but turned out to be a wake-up call?

Your mileage may vary but that 'too safe' comment is pretty common in design programs. Most of the time they're trying to get you to take a risk, not tear you down.

Gotta agree with this. Its like how everyone tells you to step out of your comfort zone at work or in relationships too. The "safe" label is just code for they see potential in you but youre playing it too small. Happens all the time in real life not just design school. People get stuck in a rut and someone has to poke them to try something different even if it feels harsh at first.
